Wimbledon Organisers Remain Confident Amid Unpredictable Weather
Amidst the unpredictable weather challenges, Wimbledon organisers remain confident in the tournament’s resilience. Chief executive Sally Bolton assures that the event is well-equipped to get back on track and conclude by Sunday evening, thanks to an extra day of play and the utilisation of the two Centre Court roofs.
“We now have an extra day, we’ve got the two roofs, so, in terms of resilience to get through the Championships, we’re confident we can still do that despite the continuing variability of the weather,” Bolton stated.
While Wimbledon’s preference is to complete the entire tournament on the iconic grass courts, the All England Club has a contingency plan involving the large indoor tennis centre across the road. However, Bolton emphasised that the indoor option would only be a “last resort,” as the courts are hard-surfaced rather than grass.
In recent years, Wimbledon has adapted to improve tournament efficiency, including the expansion to a 14-day format and changes to the mixed doubles format. These adaptations aim to shorten matches and enhance the overall resilience of the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam event.
