Wimbledon Mixed Doubles: Watson and Salisbury Advance to Last 16
In a rain-interrupted match at Wimbledon, the British duo of Heather Watson and Joe Salisbury booked their spot in the mixed doubles last 16. The pair came from behind to clinch a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Belgium’s Sander Gille and Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok.
Watson and Salisbury, who are set to team up for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, had to overcome a one-set deficit to level the match. Resuming play on Tuesday after the contest was paused the previous day, the British duo quickly closed out the second set to even the score.
The deciding match tiebreaker proved to be a grueling affair, but Watson and Salisbury ultimately prevailed to secure a meeting with Poland’s Jan Zielinski and Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh in the next round.
Meanwhile, fellow Britons Charles Broom and Emily Appleton were eliminated in the first round, suffering a 6-4, 7-6(7-3) defeat against Croatia’s Mate Pavic and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok.
The mixed doubles final, originally scheduled for Thursday, has now been postponed to Sunday due to a backlog of matches resulting from Wimbledon’s decision to revise the tournament’s schedule.
