Tennis Legends Shine at Italian Open
Tennis legends Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Naomi Osaka all secured comfortable victories in their opening-round matches at the prestigious Italian Open in Rome.
World number one Swiatek, aiming for her third title in the Eternal City, dominated American Bernarda Pera, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win in just over an hour. Meanwhile, American rising star Gauff dispatched Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes.
Japan’s Osaka also made a strong statement, completing a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over world number 20 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. The straightforward, rain-interrupted victory in one hour and 11 minutes marked Osaka’s first-ever career win against a top-20 player on clay.
“I’m going into this match knowing that she has way more experience than me on clay,” Osaka said. “I feel like I’m still a baby giraffe, like I’m trying to learn my steps. I’m just extremely humble. I want to learn from the match I played today and hopefully apply that.”
The three Tennis stars’ commanding performances have set the stage for an exciting continuation of the Italian Open, as they aim to make their mark on the clay-court season.
