Tennis Legend Daniil Medvedev Cruises into French Open Third Round
Russian tennis star and 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev progressed to the French Open third round after his opponent, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, retired from their second-round match.
The fifth-seeded Medvedev was leading the contest 6-1 5-0 when the 57th-ranked Kecmanovic, 24, conceded defeat, shaking his head towards the chair umpire after losing his serve for the third time in the second set. The match lasted just 55 minutes, with Medvedev showcasing an impressive performance, hitting 26 winners and committing only six unforced errors.
“This is only the third time in his eight main draw appearances at the prestigious clay-court Grand Slam that the 28-year-old Medvedev has managed to advance past the opening round. His best result at the French Open was a quarterfinal run in 2021.”
Medvedev will now face either Argentine 31st seed Mariano Navone or Czech Tomas Machac in the third round as he continues his quest for a second major title.
Elsewhere in the men’s singles draw on Thursday, world number one Novak Djokovic returns to action against Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, while German sixth seed Alexander Zverev, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the first round, takes on Belgium’s David Goffin.
