Tennis Legend Rafael Nadal to Skip Wimbledon 2023, Focus on Olympics
Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his decision to forego this year’s Wimbledon tournament in order to concentrate on the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. The 38-year-old Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, revealed that he will compete in a clay-court event in Bastad, Sweden, as part of his preparations for the Olympic tennis tournament, which commences on July 27.
Wimbledon, where Nadal triumphed in 2008 and 2010, is scheduled to begin on July 1. Nadal expressed his disappointment at missing the “great atmosphere” of the prestigious grass-court event, stating that Wimbledon “will always be in my heart.” However, the tennis legend’s primary focus now lies on the Olympic Games, following his early exit from the French Open last month.
“With this goal, we believe that the best for my body is not to change surface and keep playing on clay until then,” Nadal explained, emphasizing the importance of maintaining his form on the clay courts leading up to the Olympics. The world’s 264th-ranked player also announced that he will partner with the rising star Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles event at the Olympic Games.
Nadal, who has previously hinted at the possibility of retirement later this year, refused to confirm if the French Open would be his last appearance at the tournament. As the Tennis Hall of Fame prepares to welcome another legend, Nadal’s absence from Wimbledon this year will undoubtedly be felt by fans and the sport alike.
