Novak Djokovic Expects Thrilling Clash with Rising Star Rune at Wimbledon
Wimbledon’s defending champion Novak Djokovic is bracing for a captivating Centre Court showdown with Danish sensation Holger Rune in the quest for a quarter-final berth. The 24-time Grand Slam titlist, who is 16 years Rune’s senior, is well aware of the formidable challenge the young gun will pose on Monday.
“Rune’s a spectacular player, no doubt. He loves the big stage, loves playing on grass. I think he’s a very, very tricky opponent,” said the second-seeded Djokovic, who is eyeing a record-extending 8th Wimbledon crown and 25th major triumph overall.
Despite their age gap, the Serbian legend shares a cordial rapport with Rune, acknowledging, “I actually get along very well with [Rune]. He’s a very nice guy, always has been to me and to my team, and vice versa.” Djokovic has faced Rune on five previous occasions, emerging victorious in three of those encounters, including the two most recent hardcourt meetings in 2023.
However, the 37-year-old is under no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead. “It’s going to take my best tennis to win,” he asserted. Djokovic further elaborated, “I always try to be available to him for any practice or advice or guidance or anything like that. I think we have quite similar styles of tennis. But when it comes to playing on the court and competing, obviously we both have that fire. I’m sure that on Monday, we’ll see a lot of fireworks on the court.”
