Geneva – The tennis world is abuzz with the unexpected news that world No. 1 Novak Djokovic has secured a wild card entry into the upcoming Geneva Open, the last men’s tournament before the highly anticipated French Open.
Djokovic, who will celebrate his 37th birthday while competing in Geneva, has not graced the Swiss courts since 2011, when he lost to Kei Nishikori in the semifinals of Roger Federer’s hometown event in Basel. The Serbian tennis legend has since gone on to establish himself as a dominant force in the sport, boasting an impressive 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
“The surprise entry comes on the heels of Djokovic’s unexpected defeat to 32nd-ranked Alejandro Tabilo in the third round of the recent Italian Open, prompting the world No. 1 to seek more clay-court action before defending his title at Roland Garros, which commences on May 26th.”
Djokovic’s last clay-court event, the Monte Carlo Masters, ended in a semifinal loss to the seventh-ranked Casper Ruud, who will be aiming for a third Geneva Open title after his victories in 2021 and 2022.
With the main draw set to start on Sunday, tennis enthusiasts can look forward to a thrilling encounter as Djokovic, the undisputed king of the sport, takes to the clay courts of Geneva in pursuit of fine-tuning his game ahead of the French Open.
