Tennis Legends Murray and Evans Granted Wild Card Doubles Entry at French Open
Paris, France – May 17, 2023 (BBC Tennis) – In a significant move, three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray and fellow British tennis star Daniel Evans have been awarded a wild card to compete in the men’s doubles event at the upcoming French Open. This marks the first time in over two decades that a non-French duo has been granted such an opportunity at Roland Garros.
The 37-year-old Murray, a former world No. 1, has been recovering from an ankle injury and will also feature in the singles main draw, likely making this his final appearance at the prestigious clay-court Grand Slam. A two-time Wimbledon and Olympic gold medalist, Murray has been selective in his tournament participation in recent years following his 2018 hip surgery, but remains determined to represent Britain again at the Paris Games.
Murray’s return to Roland Garros comes after a four-year absence, as he last featured in the first round of the French Open in 2019. His best result at the clay-court major was a runner-up finish in 2016.
Despite his recent struggles, the Tennis Hall of Famer will team up with Evans, another seasoned British player, in the doubles event, eager to showcase their skills and experience on the international stage once more.
“This is a unique opportunity for us to compete together at a Grand Slam, and we’re excited to represent Britain on this stage,” said Evans.
