In a captivating display, Canadian world number 30 Leylah Fernandez defeated the fourth-seeded American Madison Keys, the defending champion, with a thrilling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in blustery conditions at the Eastbourne tournament. The 21-year-old Fernandez will now face last year’s runner-up, Russian sixth seed Daria Kasatkina, in Sunday’s final.
Daria Kasatkina Rallies to Overcome Jasmine Paolini
Kasatkina rallied from a set down to overcome French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Paolini was aiming to become the first Italian finalist at Eastbourne since Raffaella Reggi in 1989, but Kasatkina’s steadfast performance ultimately prevailed.
“Despite Paolini’s impressive start, Kasatkina found her rhythm, breaking the Italian’s serve as she tried to force a second-set tiebreaker. Although Paolini raced to a 2-0 lead in the third set, Kasatkina regained control, winning five of the final six games to secure her spot in the final.”
Fernandez vs. Kasatkina Final
Sunday’s matchup between Fernandez and Kasatkina will be their first meeting on grass. Kasatkina has won both of their previous encounters, but the young Canadian is confident that the surface suits her aggressive playing style, and she is in excellent form.
The Eastbourne tournament serves as one of the final grass-court events before the prestigious Wimbledon Championships, which are set to commence on Monday.
