In a Concerning Development for Tennis Fans, World Number Five Jessica Pegula Withdraws from French Open
Jessica Pegula, the world number five, has withdrawn from the upcoming French Open due to ongoing neck and back injuries. The 30-year-old American has not competed since April, when she helped the United States secure a Billie Jean King Cup qualifier victory over Belgium.
Pegula, who reached the third round at Roland Garros last year, has yet to advance past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament in singles play. Addressing her decision to sit out the French Open, the Tennis legend shared on Instagram, “I’m just about back to practising normal (haven’t had any issues for weeks) but played it super safe with recovery and return to play.“
The American player expressed optimism about her return, stating, “If I had another five to seven days I would have been there 100%. So I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer and grinding out the rest of the year.” With the French Open kicking off this Sunday in Paris, Pegula’s absence will be felt by both fans and her fellow competitors.
