Jasmine Paolini’s Remarkable Run at the 2024 French Open
Tuscany-born Italian tennis player Jasmine Paolini has delivered a remarkable run at the 2024 French Open. Making her WTA Tour debut in 2015, Paolini had previously won only four matches in 16 Grand Slam appearances before this January. However, the world number 15 has enjoyed a breakout year, winning two career singles titles and stunning former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals to win over the Paris crowds.
Paolini’s impressive performance means Italians have reached the last four of a major singles tournament for the first time in the Open era, with compatriot Jannik Sinner also reaching the men’s semi-finals. Additionally, Paolini has reached the final of the women’s doubles event alongside fellow Italian Sara Errani, a 2012 French Open singles finalist.
Regardless of the outcome of the final, the 12th seed Paolini will enter the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time on Monday, potentially reaching a career-high ranking of fifth if she defeats world number one Iga Swiatek.
As Swiatek aims for her third consecutive French Open title, Paolini will seek to emulate her compatriot Francesca Schiavone, the only Italian woman to have won the Roland Garros title (2010).
