Rublev Survives Tough Opening Test at French Open
On the opening day of the French Open, sixth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia faced a challenging test against Japan’s Taro Daniel, ultimately prevailing with a 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 7-5 victory on Court Simonne-Mathieu. The 26-year-old Rublev, seeking to advance beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, had to work hard for the win, which lasted three hours and 11 minutes.
Rublev, known for his occasional on-court frustrations, threw his racket to the ground in the second set after squandering three set points. However, he regrouped and displayed determination to grind out the victory, despite world number 80 Daniel’s attempt to force a fourth-set tie-break.
“It was a tough match, but I’m glad I was able to come through in the end,” Rublev said in his post-match interview.
The Russian will now face either Pedro Martinez or Thiago Agustin Tirante in the next round. Earlier in the day, French number one and 17th seed Ugo Humbert suffered a 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-3 defeat to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.
As the day’s action continued, world number three Carlos Alcaraz of Spain took on lucky loser J.J. Wolf, while Britain’s Andy Murray faced his old rival Stan Wawrinka in the night session on Court Phillipe-Chatrier.
