Dominic Thiem Kickstarts French Open Qualifying Campaign with Comeback Victory
Dominic Thiem, the former US Open champion, began his 2023 French Open qualifying journey with a hard-fought comeback victory against Italy’s Franco Agamenone on the Suzanne Lenglen court. The 30-year-old Austrian, who is set to retire later this year, battled back from a set down to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in front of a packed crowd.
Despite not receiving a wildcard for the main draw of Roland Garros, where he was the runner-up in 2018 and 2019, Thiem is determined to make his way through the qualifying rounds and earn a spot in the main event, which commences on Sunday.
Thiem’s Journey to Recapture His Form
Thiem, who has struggled with a wrist injury since his US Open triumph in 2020, is currently ranked 131st in the world. His road to the main draw will require two more victories, as he aims to recapture the form that once saw him reach the pinnacle of the Tennis world.
