Daniil Medvedev Stages Thrilling Comeback at Wimbledon
Amidst the thrilling action at Wimbledon, fifth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev staged a remarkable comeback on Centre Court. The 28-year-old, who reached the semi-finals at the prestigious tournament last year, was forced to dig deep against Frenchman Alexandre Muller. After losing the first set and falling behind a break, Medvedev showcased his resilience, rallying to secure a hard-fought 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 7-5 victory over three hours and 28 minutes.
“It was never easy, but I managed to stay solid, stay in the match, and try to fight back,” Medvedev reflected on his performance. Despite acknowledging that he could have played better, the Russian expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, “I’m definitely happy with the win – I should have played much better, but when you win, there is the next round to do better.”
Medvedev’s third-round opponent will be the winner of the matchup between China’s 32nd seed Zhang Zhizhen and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
Disappointing Result for Casper Ruud
Elsewhere, eighth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud, who is known to prefer clay and hard-court surfaces, suffered a disappointing 6-4 7-5 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 defeat at the hands of world number 94 Fabio Fognini of Italy. This marks the third consecutive year that Ruud has been eliminated in the second round at Wimbledon.
