Canadian tennis stars have made a strong showing at the prestigious French Open, with Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, and Leylah Fernandez all progressing to the third round of the clay-court Grand Slam.
Montreal’s Auger-Aliassime, the men’s 21st seed, secured a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over German qualifier Henri Squire in the second round. The 22-year-old Canadian unleashed 12 aces, including one to set up match point, and secured a decisive break in the fourth set to clinch the win.
In a thrilling encounter, Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ontario, rallied past 25th-seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 triumph. The Canadian’s powerful serve, which included 21 aces, and a crucial break in the fourth set, proved to be the difference.
Leylah Fernandez, the women’s 31st seed from Laval, Quebec, continued her impressive run by defeating China’s Xiyu Wang 6-3, 6-4. The 21-year-old defended five of the six break points she faced and broke Wang three times to secure the victory.
All three Canadian Tennis talents will now face formidable opponents in the third round, with Auger-Aliassime taking on the winner of the match between Japan’s Kei Nishikori and 15th-seed Ben Shelton of the United States. Shapovalov will square off against eighth-seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, while Fernandez will battle eighth-seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
