Wimbledon Delight: Britain’s Henry Patten Reaches First Men’s Doubles Final
In a remarkable turn of events, British tennis player Henry Patten has secured his maiden appearance in the Wimbledon men’s doubles final. Patten, partnering Finland’s Harri Heliovaara, defeated fellow Briton and 2023 champion Neal Skupski, alongside New Zealander Michael Venus, in a straight-sets victory on Court One.
The unseeded duo of Patten and Heliovaara displayed outstanding tenacity, breaking Venus’ serve early in the match and holding onto their advantage throughout the tense opening set, which they won 6-4. The second set remained on serve, with Patten and Heliovaara dominating the tie-break 7-1 to secure their place in the final.
“This remarkable run has come as a surprise, as the 28-year-old Patten had never advanced beyond the third round of a Grand Slam prior to this year’s Wimbledon.”
The pair, who only started playing together this season, have now defeated French Open champions Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in a match-deciding tie-break in the quarterfinals.
Skupski, the reigning Wimbledon doubles champion, was hoping to reach his second successive final after lifting the title with previous partner Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands last year. Venus, a former partner of Jamie Murray, was also aiming to reach his second men’s doubles final at the All England Club, having finished as runner-up in 2018.
Heliovaara, the 2022 US Open mixed doubles champion, is now guaranteed to compete in his first men’s Grand Slam doubles final, while Patten is savoring the opportunity to compete for the prestigious Wimbledon title on Saturday.
