British Players Advance at Wimbledon Doubles
On another rainy day at Wimbledon, British pair Arthur Fery and Charles Broom progressed to the second round of the men’s doubles, while Lloyd Glasspool reached the third round.
Fery and Broom, who had won the first set before play was suspended on Friday, picked up where they left off, defeating France’s Arthur Rinderknech and Nuno Borges of Portugal 6-4 6-4. They will now face seventh seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic.
In another men’s doubles match, Glasspool and his Dutch partner Jean-Julien Rojer beat Belgian 14th seeds Joran Vliegen and Sander Gille 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4), setting up a third-round tie with Germans Hendrik Jebens and Constantin Frantzen.
“It was a tough match, but we’re delighted to come through and reach the third round,” said Glasspool.
However, there was a men’s doubles defeat for Julian Cash, who had progressed to the second round with his American partner Robert Galloway on Friday. They lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 7-6 (10-4) to French duo Fabien Reboul and Sadio Doumbia.
In the women’s doubles first round, British pair Samantha Murray Sharan and Eden Silva lost 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 to eighth seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Laura Siegemund in a match that also started on Friday.
