British Duo Secure Wheelchair Singles Quarterfinals at French Open
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid, the British duo, have secured their spots in the wheelchair singles quarter-finals at the French Open after winning their respective opening matches.
Top seed Hewett, 26, who has previously clinched three singles titles at the prestigious tournament, comfortably defeated sixth seed German Joachim Gerard 6-1 6-3 on Tuesday. Meanwhile, fifth seed Reid, 32, emerged victorious against French ninth seed Stephane Houdet, winning the match 7-5 6-2.
“It’s always great to get the first round out of the way at a Grand Slam,” said Hewett. “I felt I did a good job of controlling the tempo of the match and executing my game plan.”
Later this week, Hewett and Reid will face the Dutch pair of Tom Egberink and Maikel Scheffers as they aim to secure an unprecedented fifth consecutive men’s wheelchair doubles title at Roland Garros.
