Tennis fans around the world were saddened to learn about the recent ankle injury sustained by Britain’s former world number one, Andy Murray. The 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion ruptured ankle ligaments during his third-round defeat at the Miami Open earlier this month.
According to a statement from Murray’s management team, the extent of the Tennis Injury is a full rupture of his anterior talofibular ligament and a near full-thickness rupture of his calcaneofibular ligament. As a result, the Scot will miss the upcoming clay-court Tennis events in Monte Carlo and Munich in April.
“At this stage, it is still not clear how long Andy will be out of action, and he is continuing to review options with his medical team,” the statement read. “Obviously this is very disappointing news for Andy, and he has reiterated his desire to get back on the Tennis court as soon as possible.”
The timeline for Murray’s Tennis Comeback remains uncertain, as the 37-year-old (in May) has previously stated that he does not plan to “play much past this summer.” However, the two-time Olympic champion has expressed his desire to compete at another Olympic Games before retiring, as well as making one final appearance at the French Open, which starts on May 26th.
Murray’s recent run to the last 32 in Miami had taken him to 59th in the ATP Tennis rankings, but this latest Tennis Injury setback is sure to impact his quest to qualify for direct entry into the Olympic men’s singles event in Paris later this year. Nevertheless, his experience and pedigree as a former Olympic and Grand Slam champion may still give him a path to the 2024 Games.
As tennis fans eagerly await news of Andy Murray’s Tennis Comeback, the former world number one will undoubtedly work tirelessly with his medical team to regain full fitness and return to the sport he has dominated for over a decade.
