Tennis Legend Andy Murray Suffers Early Grass-Court Defeat at Stuttgart Open
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray’s first match of the grass-court season ended in a disappointing 6-3, 6-4 loss to American player Marcos Giron at the Stuttgart Open. Making his 999th singles appearance, the 37-year-old Murray was unable to overcome his lower-ranked opponent, who currently sits at world number 54.
“Despite saving a pair of break points in his opening service game, Murray was unable to capitalize on an early opportunity to break Giron’s serve. The American soon took advantage, breaking Murray to go up 4-2 before comfortably closing out the first set.”
While Murray rallied at the start of the second set, holding serve to love in the first game, he was unable to convert on a 40-15 lead on Giron’s serve. The American instantly broke back and maintained that advantage until the end, securing the victory.
This early exit at the Stuttgart Open marks a setback in Murray’s preparations for what is likely to be his final Wimbledon appearance. The former world number one has previously stated that he does not intend to “play much beyond the summer.”
Next up for Giron is a second-round matchup against another Briton, sixth seed Jack Draper, on Wednesday. As for Murray, he hopes to find better form at the upcoming Cinch Championships at Queen’s, before teaming up with brother Jamie for a first-ever Grand Slam doubles appearance at Wimbledon.
