Tennis Enthusiast Felix Auger-Aliassime Bows Out of French Open in Round of 16
Paris, June 2, 2024 – In a closely watched match at the French Open, Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime saw his tournament run come to an end on Sunday. The 21st-seeded Canadian fell to the third-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, with a final score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
Alcaraz, widely considered one of the rising stars in men’s tennis, proved too formidable an opponent for Auger-Aliassime. The 20-year-old Spaniard broke Auger-Aliassime’s serve six times on 16 opportunities and hit 34 winners – 20 more than his Canadian counterpart. Auger-Aliassime struggled with 39 unforced errors, 15 more than Alcaraz, and appeared to be dealing with a left leg issue, prompting a medical timeout during the match.
“Alcaraz proved too strong for me today. He played a great match and deserved the victory. I’ll learn from this experience and come back stronger.” – Felix Auger-Aliassime
The loss marked Auger-Aliassime’s third straight defeat against Alcaraz, tying their career head-to-head record at 3-3. Alcaraz now advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face ninth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.
Despite the disappointing result, Auger-Aliassime can take solace in matching his best-ever performance at the French Open, having also reached the round of 16 in 2022 before falling to the legendary Rafael Nadal.
In other Canadian news from Roland Garros, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe defeated the Chinese duo of Xinyu Jiang and Hanyu Gao in the women’s doubles event. The ninth-seeded pair will now face Japan’s Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in the next round.
