Wimbledon Update – Skupski Advances, Salisbury’s Campaign Ends
In the latest developments from the Wimbledon Championships, Britain’s Neal Skupski has progressed to the third round of the men’s doubles, while Joe Salisbury’s campaign has come to an end.
Skupski, seeded ninth alongside New Zealand’s Michael Venus, secured a hard-fought victory over Australia’s John Peers and Rinky Hijikata, winning 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 in a match that was repeatedly disrupted by rain. They will now face Americans Christopher Eubanks and Evan King in the next round.
“It was a really tough match, but we’re delighted to get through to the next round,” said Skupski.
However, it was a disappointing day for fourth-seeded Salisbury and his American partner Rajeev Ram, the four-time Grand Slam champions, as they fell to Germany’s Andreas Mies and Australia’s John-Patrick Smith, 4-6 6-3 6-2.
In a positive note for British tennis, wildcards Charles Broom and Arthur Fery defeated seventh seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic, 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5), to advance to the third round of the men’s doubles.
The mixed doubles competition also saw success for British wildcards Marcus Willis and Alicia Barnett, who defeated eighth seeds Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching, 6-3 3-6 (10-5), in a match moved to Court One.
Elsewhere, Emily Appleton and Lily Miyazaki were unable to overcome the top seeds, Belgium’s Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan, losing 6-1 6-2 in the women’s doubles second round. In the third round, Olivia Nicholls and her Slovakian partner Tereza Mihalikova were defeated 3-6 6-2 6-3 by ninth seeds Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok.
