Tennis Sensation Jasmine Paolini Reaches Wimbledon Fourth Round with Impressive Victory over Bianca Andreescu
(BBC Sport, July 8, 2023) – In a thrilling display of tennis prowess, Jasmine Paolini of Italy has advanced to the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in her career. The 28-year-old, who was a finalist at the recent French Open, overcame the seventh-seeded Bianca Andreescu of Canada in a straight-sets victory of 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 under the roof of Court One.
The match was a closely contested affair in the opening set, as both players showcased their attacking instincts and looked to seize the initiative. However, Andreescu, who was making her return to the sport after a nine-month layoff due to a back injury, was unable to maintain her level as the match progressed.
“Paolini, who had never won a match at Wimbledon prior to this year, has continued her remarkable career surge.”
The Italian, who had previously not gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam event until 2024, will now face the 12th-seeded Madison Keys or the 18th-seeded Marta Kostyuk in the last 16.
This victory comes just five weeks after Paolini and Andreescu faced each other in the third round of the French Open, where the Italian emerged victorious in three sets. Andreescu, now ranked 176th in the world, has been plagued by a series of serious injuries since her surprise triumph at the US Open as a 19-year-old in 2019.
