Tennis Legend Casper Ruud Clinches Third Geneva Open Title in Four Years
Geneva, May 27 – In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, Norwegian tennis sensation Casper Ruud secured his third Geneva Open title in the past four years. The world’s 7th-ranked player overcame a challenging start to defeat Tomas Machac 7-5, 6-3 in the final, showcasing his prowess on the clay courts.
Ruud’s road to victory was anything but straightforward, as he had to complete two matches on the same day, returning to court less than three hours after defeating Flavio Cobolli 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) in a match that had been delayed due to heavy rain the previous day. The young Norwegian rallied from a slow start and saved a match point in the deciding set to secure his place in the final.
In the title match, Ruud faced Machac, who had earlier eliminated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Despite a slow start, the reigning Swiss Tennis champion found his rhythm and came from behind to claim the opening set 7-5 before sealing the victory with a 6-3 scoreline in the second set.
“He definitely deserved to win the first set,” Ruud acknowledged. “It was tough to find a groove. The weather has been a bit challenging this week but today was fantastic.”
With his 12th career title, Ruud’s dominance on clay courts continues to shine, as this was his 11th triumph on the surface. The victory in Geneva also marked his fifth in Switzerland and third in the prestigious clay-court tournament.
Ruud, who was the runner-up at the past two French Open championships, will now shift his focus to Roland Garros, where he will look to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title, starting on Sunday.
