On May 24, 2024, Canadian tennis player Marina Stakusic’s pursuit of her first Grand Slam main draw appearance fell short at the French Open. The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, lost in the final round of qualifying, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva, who was ranked 29th in the women’s qualifying tournament.
Stakusic had previously defeated 10th seed Marina Bassols Ribera of Spain and Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic to reach the final qualifying round. Despite her valiant efforts, she was unable to secure a spot in the main draw of the prestigious clay-court event.
With Stakusic’s elimination, five Canadian players will now compete in the main singles draws at Roland-Garros. On the men’s side, Gabriel Diallo qualified on Thursday and will join compatriots Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. In the women’s draw, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, who is making her return to action after a nine-month absence due to a back injury, will represent Canada.
“Despite her valiant efforts, she was unable to secure a spot in the main draw of the prestigious clay-court event.”
