Tennis Legend’s Grass Court Return Ends in Defeat
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki’s first match on a grass court in five years concluded with a loss to Belgian fifth seed Elise Mertens at the Birmingham Classic.
Wozniacki, the 2018 Australian Open champion, succumbed to a 6-4 6-1 defeat against her formidable opponent.
“The 33-year-old Dane returned to professional tennis last year, three and a half years after her retirement following the 2020 Australian Open. Her highly anticipated grass court comeback, however, proved short-lived as Mertens showcased her skilled grass court game to overcome Wozniacki in the opening round.”
Elsewhere, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka also faced an early exit, losing 6-4 3-6 6-3 to Chinese sixth seed Zheng Qinwen in Berlin.
British Players on the Grass Courts
The Birmingham Classic has also seen several British players take to the grass courts, including:
- Katie Boulter, the recent Nottingham Open champion, will face Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.
- Harriet Dart takes on Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima.
- Heather Watson is set to battle against Czech eighth seed Marie Bouzkova.
- Amelia Rajecki will make her WTA main draw debut against Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
