Wimbledon Champion Marketa Vondrousova Kicks Off Grass Season with Straight-Set Victory at Berlin Open
Marketa Vondrousova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, began her grass-court campaign with a convincing straight-set win over Spain’s Rebeka Masarova at the Berlin Open. The 24-year-old Czech, currently ranked sixth in the world, prevailed 6-4, 6-3 in the German capital and will face Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in the next round.
Vondrousova, who made history last year as the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title, has now won eight consecutive matches on grass following her maiden Grand Slam triumph at the All England Club. Despite facing three break points in the opening set, the Czech player managed to break Masarova’s serve in the ninth game, securing a 5-4 lead, and then served out the set.
“Maintaining her momentum, Vondrousova immediately broke her Spanish opponent in the second set and established a 4-1 advantage with another break of serve. Though Masarova tried to reduce the deficit, Vondrousova ultimately closed out the match on the Spaniard’s serve, ensuring a winning start as she prepares to defend her Wimbledon crown.”
The Berlin Open features a strong field, with eight of the world’s top 10 players competing, excluding world number one Iga Swiatek and seventh-ranked Jasmine Paolini. On Wednesday, sixth seed Zheng Qinwen of China will face four-time major champion Naomi Osaka, while seventh seed Maria Sakkari of Greece takes on two-time Slam winner Victoria Azarenka, and eighth seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia squares off against Wang Xinyu.
