Raducanu Secures Semi-Final Spot at Nottingham Open
On June 11th, the Nottingham Open witnessed a significant development as Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion, secured her spot in the semi-finals. Raducanu, the 21-year-old British phenom, will face off against her compatriot, Katie Boulter, in a highly anticipated all-British showdown.
Raducanu’s opponent for the quarter-finals, Fran Jones, a fellow British player, was forced to withdraw from the match due to a shoulder injury. “> Hopefully everyone can understand that with the big events coming up, I’m not in a position to be taking many risks,” said the 23-year-old Jones, with Wimbledon just around the corner on July 1st.
Boulter, the 27-year-old British number one and the defending champion in Nottingham, reached the semi-finals with a convincing two-set victory over Poland’s fifth seed Magdalena Frech on Friday.
Raducanu, who missed the French Open to focus on her fitness ahead of Wimbledon as she continues her comeback from injury, has showcased her mettle by defeating Ena Shibahara and Daria Snigur en route to the quarter-finals.
The start of Saturday’s play was delayed due to inclement weather, but a resumption is expected at 13:15 BST. The quarter-final between Tunisian top seed Ons Jabeur and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova will precede the highly anticipated semi-final clash between Raducanu and Boulter. The final match of the last eight will feature unseeded competitors Diane Parry from France and Kimberly Birrell from Australia.
