Novak Djokovic Secures Semi-final Berth at Geneva Open
Djokovic Overcomes Spirited Challenge from Griekspoor
Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, secured a semi-final berth at the Geneva Open on Thursday. The 37-year-old Serbian legend overcame a spirited challenge from Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor, prevailing with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Djokovic, who had accepted a wildcard to the ATP 250 tournament, was seeking to build momentum ahead of the upcoming French Open, set to commence on Sunday. Despite Griekspoor’s strong start, Djokovic demonstrated his experience and resilience, saving four set points in the 10th game before breaking his opponent’s serve and clinching the first set.
“I thought that the first set could have gone his way easily because I think he was the better player for most of the first set,” Djokovic said after the match. “I was lucky to find some really good serves and from that moment onwards really played some good solid tennis. The second set was really good.”
The second set was a more dominant display from the 24-time Grand Slam champion, as he broke Griekspoor’s serve three times to seal the victory in just 25 minutes. Djokovic’s triumph made him the oldest semi-finalist in the history of the Geneva tournament.
Djokovic’s focus now shifts to the French Open, where he will aim to defend his title. The Serbian superstar will face French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the opening round of the year’s second Grand Slam event, as he seeks to secure his first trophy of the 2024 season.
