Tennis Qualifying Action: Canadian Gabriel Diallo Advances at French Open
Paris, May 20, 2024 – In a thrilling start to the French Open qualifying tournament, Canada’s Gabriel Diallo secured a hard-fought victory over Argentina’s Genaro Alberto Olivieri. The world No. 166 player from Montreal prevailed in a three-set battle, defeating his opponent 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours and 32 minutes.
Diallo’s performance was marked by his aggressive play, unleashing five aces and winning 65% of his points on the second serve. The 22-year-old Canadian also capitalized on 6 out of 11 breakpoint opportunities, showcasing his strong return game.
“With this triumph, Diallo has earned a spot in the second round of the French Open qualifying draw, where he will face off against Marco Trungelliti of Argentina on Wednesday. The young Canadian is aiming to secure a main draw berth at Roland-Garros, a feat he has yet to accomplish in his career.”
Joining Diallo in the qualifying action, fellow Canadians Alexis Galarneau and Marina Stakusic, as well as Rebecca Marino, are also set to take the court on Tuesday. Galarneau will square off against Quentin Halys of France, while Stakusic and Marino will face Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera and Argentina’s Martina Capurro Taborda, respectively.
The 2024 French Open is scheduled to run until June 9, and these qualifying matches will determine the final spots in the prestigious Grand Slam tournament’s main draw.
