Tennis Icon Andy Murray Makes Successful Comeback at ATP Challenger Event
On May 15th, former world number one Andy Murray made a successful comeback at the ATP Challenger event in Bordeaux, France. The three-time Grand Slam champion progressed to the second round after his opponent, Kyrian Jacquet, retired at the start of the second set.
Murray was leading the match 7-5 2-0 when the world number 219 Frenchman decided he could no longer continue, much to the disappointment of the local crowd. However, the spectators in Bordeaux still treated Murray to a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ on his 37th birthday.
“The early finish was not ideal, but I’m pleased to have got the win and look forward to the next round.”
The Briton was making his return to the court after suffering ruptured ankle ligaments at the Miami Open in March. In a strategic move to reduce recovery time, Murray opted not to undergo surgery, with hopes of competing at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the Paris Olympics this summer.
Murray will now face off against fellow Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in the next round. Barrere secured his spot by defeating Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6 6-2.
Compatriot Dan Evans, the British number three and fifth seed, also progressed to the next round, defeating France’s Hugo Grenier 6-4 6-4.
