Australian tennis legend Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he still has the “fire in the belly” to continue his illustrious career in the world of Tennis, despite a challenging year riddled with injuries.
Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist and ATP Tour champion, missed all four major tournaments in 2023 due to wrist, knee, and foot injuries, and has only played one ATP Tour match since October 2022. In January, the 28-year-old had even expressed his doubts about his desire to continue playing Tennis.
However, in a recent interview with the Australian Open Show podcast, Kyrgios has now declared his readiness to make a comeback to the sport he loves. “It’s arguably been one of the hardest years of my life tennis-wise,” Kyrgios admitted, “I’ve had some really hard conversations with myself, if I want to keep doing this. So I know there’s still fire in the belly, which is good, it’s healthy.”
After undergoing knee and wrist surgery to address his injury troubles, Kyrgios is now cautious about setting a timeline for his return to the court. “I’m hitting for the first time next week, so as soon as I get back out on court I guess it’s just going to be starting up, getting that load back through my wrist and my body,” he said. “But I definitely will be coming back. It’s just hard to put an exact date on it because the injury was quite severe.”
The Tennis Legend, known for his exceptional talent and engaging personality, is eager to rediscover his love for the sport after a challenging recovery process. In 2022, Kyrgios reached his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, where he faced off against the legendary Novak Djokovic. He also clinched the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open, partnering with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
“As Kyrgios prepares to return to the court, Tennis fans around the world will be eagerly anticipating his comeback, hoping to witness the return of one of the sport’s most captivating and talented players. With the fire still burning within him, the Australian Open, Wimbledon Tennis, and other major tournaments could soon witness the resurgence of this Tennis Legend.”
