(BBC Sports, April 18, 2023)
Rising British tennis star Emma Raducanu showcased her resurgent form, clinching a straight-set win over former world number one Angelique Kerber in the first round of the Stuttgart Open. The 21-year-old Raducanu, who has been steadily regaining her footing after undergoing wrist surgeries last year, managed the match with poise, emerging victorious in just one hour and 26 minutes.
Raducanu, currently ranked 303rd in the world, displayed impressive composure as she navigated the challenge posed by the experienced Kerber, a three-time Grand Slam champion. The young Briton was rarely troubled, securing a decisive 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
“It wasn’t the prettiest, but I just focused on the next point and did not get too bogged down.”
- Emma Raducanu
This victory marks Raducanu’s third win in the past week, following her successful performances in the Billie Jean King Cup, where she helped Britain defeat France. Raducanu’s path to the next round will see her take on Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, as she continues her quest to reclaim her place among the elite in the world of Tennis.
